Queen of the Black Coast 4

  1. QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST 4 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as Plate 4 in my 1976 Conan art folio, "QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST," based on the story by Robert E. Howard, published by Bortner & Kruse.

    In this picture, Conan is preparing Belit for burial at sea. I had difficulty deciding whether the expression on his face should be mad, or sad.

    Death in fiction mirrors death in real life.
    In real life when someone dies . . . a bell tolls;

    No human is an island unto itself, we are all part of the main,
    Anyone's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,
    And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
    It tolls for thee . . .
    John Donne
